Windows 95 Dial Up Networking Script For NorthNet

Windows 95 includes a scripting tool that can automate your connection to NorthNet. Be sure you have created a NorthNet dial-up networking connection and that you have tested it manually first. After you are sure that it is working properly you are ready to install scripting.

Step 1: Using a text editor such as Notepad create a file called NorthNet.scp and place it in the directory:
C:\Program Files\Accessories\

This is how to do it:

Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Notepad.
Enter the text below. When finished, click on File, Save.
When prompted for the file name enter:
C:\Program Files\Acessories\northnet.scp

THE SCRIPT (northnet.scp script file for connecting to NorthNet):

Step2: Verify that Dial-up Scripting tool is installed. Press the [Start] button, select Programs, then Accessories. if the Dial-Up Scripting Tool shows up, you're ready to proceed to step 3.

If it is not there, and you have the Windows 95 CD, press the [start] button, select Settings..., Then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select the windows Setup tab, then click on the Have Disk option. Assuming your CD-ROM drive is D:, enter the path of D:\Admin\Apptools\Dscript Press OK and the SLIP/CSLPI drivers and Dial-Up Scripting tool will be displayed. PUT A CHECKMARK IN THE BOX BEFORE YOU CLICK ON INSTALL. Click on the Install, then click on OK and close the control Panel.

If you have Windows 95 on floppies, you can download the dial-up Scripting tool and SLIP drivers from NorthNet. In Netscape, enter the following URL in the Location window:

ftp://zappa.northnet.org/pub/slip/pc/dscrpt.exe
This is a self-extracting archive file. Download it to your \temp directory, run it, and read the README.TXT file.

Step 3: Link the NorthNet icon in the Dial Up Networking program group with your script. to do so:

a) Go to Start, Programs, accessories, Dial-up Scripting Tool.
b) Under Connections, highlight the NorthNet connection
c) Under Script, click on Browse. Find and choose 'northnet'. Click on open.
d)"step through script" should be unchecked. "Start terminal screen minimized" should be checked.
e) Click on Apply and Close.

Step 4:
a) Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Dial UP Networking.
b) Highlight the NorthNet icon and click on File, Properties.
c) Click on the Configure bar. Click on the Options Tab.
d) Uncheck "Bring up terminal window after dialling"
e) Click on OK; click on OK again.

That's it. The next time You use Dial UP Networking to connect to NorthNet the script will take over. Just be sure YOURE USERNAME AND PASSWORD IS ENTERED IN THE CONNECT WINDOW before clicking on Connect.

Note: the system will not allow you to save your password unless you have Client forr Microsoft Networks installed. However, installing this client means that you have to enter your password whenever you start Windows. See below under troubleshooting for a better way.

Send an email message to help@northnet.org if you would like a copy of the script for connecting to TIA PPP in Canton.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If your script doesn't work you can put a check mark in the "step thru script" box and uncheck " Start terminal screen minimized" in step three. This will allow you to see the progress of the script and to step thru it manually during a connection.

If you do not have a greyed out password save box and you have to re-enter your password each time, the problem is that your password file has been corrupted. Just delete the .pwl file in the Windows directory and it will save your password next time.

If you have a greyed out password, Windows 95 will not allow you to save your password. However, there is a freeware program called DUNCE (Dial Up Networking Connection Enhancement) that will allow you to do this and more.

You can get the latest version from:
http://www.vecdev.com/

DUNCE is highly recommended. It will make Dial Up Networking all it should be.
