Historical Background*Snow Sculpting* The Friends of Sculpting was Established in February 2000. Filling a need for the artists to create snow & ice art for public awareness, and to promote Snow & Ice Sculpting in New York State as a Performing Winter Arts Sport .The first snow sculpture exhibited in an Olympic competition occurred in 1932 in Lake Placid, at the Lake Placid Club. Winter Fun Inc. was established in 1984 as the U. S. Sanctioning Body to organize & produce Snow Sculpting Competitions authorized by the Association International de Sculpture sur Niege Et Glace. New York State Competitions exist since 1986. Previous Competitions Buffalo, NY (1987-93) Watertown, NY (1986-95) Sackets Harbor, NY (1987-88) Cancelled due to weather Rodman, NY (1999) Lake Placid, NY (2000)(2001) Previous National Competitions were held in Milwaukee, WI- Anchorage, Alaska- Frankenmuth, MI- Watertown, NY-& Lake Geneva WI. In February 1988, Winter Fun Inc. was commissioned to produce an Olympic International Snow Sculpting Competition in conjunction with the Olympic Arts Festival in Calgary, CA. Since the 1988 Olympic Demonstration Competition, The Olympic Winter Arts Festival Organization have produced 3 Olympic Medal Competitions in: Albertsville, France 1992, Lillehammer, Norway 1994, & Nagano, Japan 1998.
